Markus Friedrich Spitta was born in 1992 in Stuttgart, Germany. At the age of eleven, he began filming and editing his own skate videos, music clips, and short films. Two years later, his family moved to Namibia, where he spent his youth and devoted every free moment to working on his own video projects.
After returning to Germany, he founded his first video production studio in Berlin and deepened his artistic engagement with film. Since then, he has worked as a director, editor, sound designer and producer and is co-founder of the creative studio offshoot*berlin. This also marked the beginning of his work on projects that address Germany’s colonial legacy.
In the fall of 2024, he founded the „Filmschaffende Vernetzung gegen Rechts“ („Filmmakers‘ Network Against the Far Right“) – a growing community of creatives committed to supporting anti-right-wing initiatives and projects.
In November 2024, his experimental short YOZIKA premiered at the ASVOF Festival in Paris. The following May, Markus completed his first short documentary PRINCESS AMAKHOE – his first more elaborate work within the field of postcolonial discourse, which he had started working on in 2021.
He is currently in post-production of his first feature-length film ERASMUS, ERASMUS, which is an autobiographical documentary film following a private development project in rural Namibia.
His work is driven by a desire to challenge visual, formal, and narrative conventions. A long-standing fascination with HDV format, camcorder technology, and analog techniques continues to shape many of his current projects.
At the same time, his approach is strongly influenced by the close relationships he builds with the people he collaborates with. For him, filmmaking is a collective process – and empathy is at its core.
